Position : PLANNING ASSISTANT

Job Description : The Urban Design and Planning Division at the Department of Sustainable Development is seeking a Planning Assistant.

This posting will remain open until enough qualified applications have been received.

This is para-professional skilled and technical work in urban planning providing information, guidance and advice to the public in response to inquiries regarding land use, zoning, platting, development applications and providing graphic information and technical assistance for use in the City Planning Division as well as administrative duties.

An employee in this class is responsible for researching, analyzing and compiling data for associated community outreach efforts and presentations, and assisting in the review and processing of development applications. Work requires some initiative and independent judgment and is usually performed under direct supervision. Work is reviewed through direct observation, review of work products submitted, and results achieved.

This job classification may be governed by the Personnel Rules, as it is not represented by a collective bargaining unit.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
Provides information, guidance and advice to the public in response to inquiries regarding land use, zoning, platting, development applications and other planning matters under the purview of the Urban Design and Planning Division.
Provides technical assistance in developing planning studies and reports or special assignments in support of new and updated plans, programs and regulations.
Collects and compiles various data, and records, tabulates and tracks information such as zoning, land use, dwelling unit counts, census information, etc.
Develops various maps, graphics and illustrations used in reports and presentations with the aid of applicable computer software applications.
Assists in the review of development applications including assistance in evaluation of site plans, re-zonings, ordinance amendments, special use permits, variances and other proposals to determine application completeness, conformance with codes, plans, and other regulations.
Plans and organizes assigned work programs, and reviews work to ensure accuracy and timeliness. Employee may be asked to develop a monitoring system, conduct evaluations and prepare progress reports in carrying out project objectives and activities in a responsible manner.
Assists in resolving customer issues.
Provides administrative assistance.
Performs related work as required.
ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES:
May assist in major programs of the Department. This work may involve extensive research, field analysis, investigation of land use and zoning patterns, population, economic characteristics, transportation and other factors and characteristics and preparation of associated community outreach efforts, work products and presentations.
May represent the Department at meetings and public hearings, and have contact with other public and private agencies and officials at the local, county, state and federal levels, as well as the public at large.
May attend evening and weekend meetings and make presentations to community groups and neighborhood associations.

JOB REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
Have successfully graduated from a standard high school or possess a G.E.D. certificate from a recognized issuing agency, preferably with some coursework or training in computer aided design and/or G.I.S. mapping.
Possess at least one (1) year of para-professional experience in a similar position in urban planning for a state, county or local government planning agency or private organization directly involved in land development or land use design functions. Completion of two (2) years of studies at an accredited college or university in an appropriate field such as architecture or urban planning may be substituted for the experience requirement.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderately loud. The work entails sedentary work in an office setting. While performing duties, employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, talk, hear, reach above and below shoulders, and use hand and finger dexterity keyboarding. The employee may be required to make site visits and attend community outreach meetings carrying a laptop computer and building plans weighing up to 10 pounds or pushing them on a cart. At times work is stressful when working under stringent time constraints.
HOW TO APPLY/ VETERAN INFORMATION
Depending on the number of applicants and the quality of their education and experience, the examination may consist of one or more of the following tests: Evaluation of Training and Experience, Oral Interview, Written Examination, or other assessment method. Applicants must attain a minimum score of 70 in each part of the examination in order to qualify. All successful applicants may be required to take a medical examination and/or pass a drug screening prior to appointment.

An eligible veteran who enters an open-competitive examination shall receive preference points added to the total passing score earned in the examination as provided for in the Florida Statutes. To obtain veteran’s preference, candidates MUST submit a copy of separation papers and the City of Fort Lauderdale’s veteran’s preference claim form (J204) at time of application.
