Position : Classroom Observer
Job Description : Headway Workforce Solutions is seeking Classroom Observers on behalf of our client in the Orlando, FL region. As a Classroom Observer, your primary function will be to go into childcare centers to conduct observations in preschool-aged classrooms (ages 3-5). The observations will focus on classroom materials and interactions between the teacher and students.
The total pay rate for this position is $27.50/ hour ($22.90/hour plus a $4.60 Health and Welfare stipend for up to 40 hours), with travel time and mileage paid. This role is temporary, lasting from March 2022 through June 2022.
As a Classroom Observer, you will
Work in your assigned local region.
Be trained in one of two sets of classroom observation measures: either (A) Language Interaction Snapshot (LISn) and Global Indicators of Quality (GIQ), or (B) Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale (ECERS-R), Global Indicators of Quality (GIQ), and Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS).
Go into childcare centers to conduct observations in preschool-aged classrooms (ages 3-5).
Collect and distribute Teacher Surveys and Teacher Reports in pre-school classrooms during scheduled observations.
Some observers may also be sent back to centers after the observation field period to collect and distribute teacher surveys as well.
Report to and have regular communication with a Field Manager regarding work assignments.
Classroom Observer Requirements
Must be fully COVID-19 vaccinated and show proof as part of the hiring process and upon request at any of the centers.
Masks must be always worn when working in the centers (masks provided).
Must consent to the performance of, and pass, a background check.
Must consent to the performance of, and pass, any additional security screenings required by childcare centers.
Must be comfortable in a classroom setting.
Must be comfortable working with school personnel to coordinate visits.
Multi-tasking under pressure.
Courteous with good communication and interpersonal skills.
Prior experience in education, teaching, early childhood development, and/or child assessments a plus.
Must have personal, reliable transportation (travel time and mileage paid) to travel to and from childcare centers.
Hours & Training
Must attend training either on March 21st or March 28th for 5-7 days
Observers must participate in training and pass certification for each measure in order to be hired for the data collection effort.
Candidates should be confident in their ability to actively learn during in-person trainings and willing to receive, incorporate and apply critical feedback from trainers.
Candidates should be prepared to go through multiple rounds of certification if they do not pass on the first attempt.
Must be available 20-30 hours per week for 8 weeks – daytime weekdays Monday through Friday.
Observations will generally take place between 8am and 12pm but may also run into early afternoons.
About the Study
Our client is conducting the Variations in Implementation of Quality Interventions (VIQI): Examining the Quality-Child Outcomes Relationship in Child Care and Early Education project, which is a large-scale, rigorous study sponsored by the Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation (OPRE) in the Administration for Children and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The VIQI project examines how classroom interventions improve a range of children’s developmental outcomes in mixed-aged classrooms serving 3- and 4-year-olds in community-based childcare and Head Start settings that vary in initial levels of quality.
Classroom Observation Measures to be Trained
LISn – Language Interaction Snapshot – examines language interactions between a focal child and adults/peers
ECERS-R – Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale – examine process and structural quality in classrooms
CLASS- Classroom Assessment Scoring System – measures overall quality with a focus on interaction among teachers and students in the classroom
GIQ – Global Indicators of Quality – captures general best practices that are inherent across interventions and ensures interrater reliability on measure
Physical Requirements
Communicate effectively through speech and listening in classroom environments.
Transport any project-related equipment and materials weighing up to 12 pounds.
Be exposed to fumes and odors as might be expected in a variable environment.
Sit, stand and walk, potentially up and down stairs most days on the job.
