Position : Assistant Signal Person
Job Description : Join our team of Assistant Signal Workers! These employees provide support with the installation, repair, and maintenance of railroad signals and grade crossing warning devices. You’ll work with several types of equipment to help ensure Union Pacific can continue to safely and efficiently transport goods to customers across North America! Accountabilities
Inspect and test our signal circuitry, equipment, and systems for problems and defects
Build and dismantle our signal crossing warning device equipment; troubleshoot and fix malfunctions
Construct, install, maintain, repair, and replace signal communication circuitry, systems, and components
Work with machines, tools, vehicles, and equipment while maintaining clean work areas
Operate company vehicles and drive throughout the geographic territory
Open to change, take initiative, make meaningful contributions, and take command of the quality and timely completion of one’s tasks
Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors and/or customers and efficiently handle controversy
Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required
Basic computer skills
Valid driver’s license
Proficient verbal and written communication skills to deliver information to coworker(s) and supervisor(s)
Able to assist and direct work of others
Able to plan, organize, and track information and activities
Able and willing to understand and apply safety rules, practice safe work habits, identify safety risks, and avoid potentially risky behaviors and situations
Able to perform basic arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and conversion of fractions into decimals and decimals into fractions to solve practical problems. In addition, applicants must be able to extract relevant information from tables, charts, graphs, and text
Able to understand and apply basic mechanical principles to solve mechanical problems
Able to communicate and work well both independently and with others

Preferred
An Associate’s degree in electrical engineering or electronic technology or higher
Experience operating heavy equipment such as construction, farm, etc. (consider professional, personal, and volunteer experience)
Experience working outdoors in variable weather conditions (consider professional, personal, and volunteer experience)
Experience working in an environment that requires you to wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection
Experience installing and/or maintaining railroad signaling devices
Completed a formal electrical training program (e.g. training or certificate presented by a community college, trade/vocational school, or military)
Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A or Class B
Experience working in a construction-type setting (consider professional, personal, and volunteer experience)
Physical Requirements
Able to make frequent coordinated hand movements to grasp, place, or move objects
Must have normal color vision
Able to perform physically strenuous work
Able to occasionally bend, stoop, and kneel
Able to safely walk and maintain balance on uneven surfaces
Able to remain standing for more than one-half of every work day with an opportunity to periodically change position for comfort
Able to frequently walk to access work site
Able to occasionally push and pull objects weighing up to 119 lbs
Able to occasionally lift and carry objects weighing up to 65 lbs
Work Conditions
Willing to work on-call, overtime, various shifts, 7 days a week, as well as weekends and holidays
Travel Requirements: Travel 95-100% of the time
Authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship
Work at heights of 20 feet or more
Willingness to practice safe work habits
May require relocation during employment
Agree to wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection where the company requires
