Come help protect the scenic Salmon River while gaining valuable natural resource management skills by becoming a Natural Resource Steward. This 24-week position seeks to place two interns within high-use and ecologically sensitive parts of the Salmon River and Salmon River Reservoir, who will work alongside ocials from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) on projects that help preserve and protect this unique natural resource.
Interns will receive a living stipend of $160, a monthly housing allowance of $570, and will be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award at the completion of their service. Interns will gain valuable resource management skills and perform a variety of duties which involve the preservation, protection and enhancement of the natural resources and the safety and well-being of the public using these resources. This includes, but is not limited to:
Educating the public on the proper use of public lands, Leave No Trace, and providing information on Rules and RegulationsCreating daily usage reports for select access sites around the reservoir and for all recreational whitewater releases on the Salmon River and creating weekly reportsEducating the public regarding current environmental topics such as fishing techniques for Salmon River & Reservoir, the Salmon River Fish Hatchery, fire danger, etc.Notifying the Forest Ranger and Forester with respect to potential problems such as those involving hazardous trail conditions and emergencies that he/she encountersPerforming minor trail maintenance (such as removing blowdown, installing or replacing trail markers and signs, and cleaning drainage devices)Working with other staff as requestedPerforming first aid and CPR in emergencies. (Most of this work will take place through the summer, May-August).
Additionally, in this internship you will work in the visitor center of the Salmon River Fish Hatchery. Duties will include:
Answering questions from the public regarding hatchery operations, fishing techniques for the Salmon River, and recreational opportunities on nearby public landsWorking directly with hatchery staff on educational displays and guided tours of the hatcheryAssisting with the day-to-day operations of the hatchery. (Most of this work will take place through the fall, September-November).
This position requires accessing numerous campsites, day-use areas, and fishing access-points (sometimes only accessible by boat). Interns must be able to travel by foot and work alone or in small groups in remote, sometimes rugged terrain and inclement weather conditions. The interns will mostly work Thursday-Sunday.
