Job Description : Overview:

The Bronx Defenders (BxD) – an innovative, progressive, holistic indigent defense office in the South Bronx – seeks an energetic administrator to join our Criminal Defense Practice as an Arraignment Clerk.
The Bronx Defenders is a public defender non-profit that is radically transforming how low-income people in the Bronx are represented in the legal system, and, in doing so, is transforming the system itself. BxD seeks thoughtful, creative, energetic individuals with a strong commitment to social justice to join our dynamic and diverse staff. Our staff of over 350 includes interdisciplinary teams made up of criminal, civil, immigration, and family defense attorneys, as well as social workers, benefits specialists, legal advocates, parent advocates, investigators, and team administrators, who collaborate to provide holistic advocacy to address the causes and consequences of legal system involvement. Through this integrated team-based structure, we have pioneered a groundbreaking, nationally-recognized model of representation called holistic defense that achieves better outcomes for our clients.
Each year, we defend more than 20,000 low-income Bronx residents in criminal, civil, child welfare, and immigration cases, and reach thousands more through our community intake, youth mentoring, and outreach programs. Through impact litigation, policy advocacy, and community organizing, we push for systemic reform at the local, state, and national levels. We take what we learn from the clients and communities that we serve and launch innovative initiatives designed to bring about real and lasting change.
The Criminal Defense Practice (CDP) at The Bronx Defenders is a team of over 150 attorneys, investigators, social workers, practice associates, and administrators who provide comprehensive criminal defense representation to people in the Bronx facing police and criminal legal system involvement. CDP attorneys collaborate zealously with the advocates and administrators on interdisciplinary holistic teams to identify and address issues that contribute to our client’s ensnarement in the criminal system and the enmeshed consequences that arise out of their contact with the system With a client-centered approach, our CDP attorneys strive to gain a deeper understanding of our clients’ circumstances and priorities. Armed with that understanding, they fight for our clients’ desired outcomes by strategically raising personalized, persuasive arguments in mitigation, negotiations, and litigation.
Responsibilities:

Arraignment Clerks serve at the front lines of our Criminal Defense Practice (CDP), handling the administrative intake process for persons waiting to see a judge for the first time after arrest. They divide their time between the fast-paced environment of the courthouse, where they perform data entry and liaise with attorneys and court staff, and the office of BxD, where they focus primarily on data entry. Reporting directly to the Senior Intake Clerk, the Arraignment Clerks will provide administrative support to the practice in the criminal courthouse, as well as in the office. This position is based in The Bronx, New York.
Responsibilities & Duties:
Check case management system, CRIMS and WebCRIMS for conflicts of interest between parties during screening process of arraigning cases
Request electronic case files from the court via the CRISDOCS system, as well as sometimes forwarding case files to our counterparts at LAS
Prepare case file packets; scan and organize case files during and after the arraignment shift
Stage cases in PEIS, an electronic database housed in our PIKA system
Enter arraigned cases during arraignment shifts quickly and accurately
Enter arraigned cases when assigned to work in the office
Communicate effectively and respectfully with BxD attorneys, as well as with court staff, including court clerks and officers, members of the District Attorney’s office, and police and corrections officers
Provide coverage in court for the Arraignment Court Advocate
Troubleshoot case processing issues for attorneys and court staff
Qualifications:

To be eligible, candidates must have:
Minimum of two years working in an administrative capacity
Candidates must demonstrate:
Interest in working with and supporting the defense of people ensnared in carceral systems in the Bronx Community
Commitment to social justice issues, and participating on a team defending people in criminal, family, immigration and civil legal proceedings
Ability to effectively and respectfully communicate, collaborate and connect with people with various backgrounds, identities and experiences
Ability to work well independently as well as collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team of lawyers and non-lawyers
Ability to multitask, maintain order and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment
Meticulous attention to detail
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Effective organization and time management skills
Ability to think critically and creatively in fast-paced settings, finding innovative solutions to unique obstacles
Ability to receive feedback constructively, reflect and shift behavior accordingly
Commitment to raising one’s cultural consciousness and challenging oppressive practices on an interpersonal and institutional level
Ability to exercise excellent judgment, discretion, and confidentiality with sensitive matters

Salary is commensurate with experience. For candidates with 2-5 years of directly relevant experience, the salary range for this position would be approximately $42,000 – $45,000. Full-time employees are also eligible for a comprehensive benefits package including but not limited to medical, dental and vision coverage; a 403(b) plan with employer contribution; a generous vacation, sick leave, and parental leave policy. More specific information about salary and benefits will be provided when and if an offer is extended.
