Job Description
The Materials Physics group in the Materials and Chemical Science and Technology directorate has an opening for a full-time research scientist position in molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and materials characterization.The Materials Physics group conducts basic and applied research on semiconductor and topological materials for energy-related applications.This position is to conduct MBE growth and characterization of semiconductor, topological semimetal and superconductor materials.
The individual is responsible for carrying out projects involving the growth and investigation III-V and II-VI semiconductors and topological semimetals.Specific duties include MBE growth, structural and electrical transport material characterization, and equipment development and maintenance.The individual is also responsible for writing and submitting grant proposals to support this research.Publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and presentation at national scientific meetings is required.

Basic Qualifications
Relevant PhD . Or, relevant Master’s Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor’s Degree and 5 or more years of experience . Demonstrates complete understanding and wide application of scientific technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Required Qualifications
The individual must have prior experience in conducting both basic and applied scientific research on III-V and II-VI semiconductors and/or topological semimetals. In-depth knowledge of photonic materials and technologies, MBE semiconductor growth, and structural and electrical transport characterization is required. Experience in designing and building ultra-high vacuum systems and applying in-situ analysis techniques is also necessary. The individual must have strong scientific writing and interpersonal communication skills as well as the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a research team.
Preferred Qualifications

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Annual Salary Range: $75,500 – $135,900
Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position’s work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
