Overview of Role:
The Facilities Division of the Facilities & Fleet Department manages daily custodial operations for over 550,000 sq. ft. of commercial facilities located in multiple areas throughout the city. The types of facilities include Recreation Centers, Libraries, Fire Stations, Office Buildings, and Public Works Maintenance Shops. The facilities operations workgroup offers a multitude of opportunities to learn new processes and skills on a frequent basis.
The Custodial Lead position is an important position within the City of Boulder Facilities & Fleet Department offering a focus and expertise into the custodial operations for the city. This role will provide leadership and quality control for an ever-expanding custodial need. This position will work directly with the Custodial Supervisor to develop and implement the work plan for the division. This will be a working, lead position requiring some time in the field training, cleaning, and inspecting facilities.
The ideal candidate for this position is a life-long learner who is comfortable with change and always looking to increase their knowledge base and skill set. The position requires a strong process improvement background as the needs of our facilities and customer base are constantly evolving. This position requires someone who is an active listener, anticipates the needs of customers, and communicates in a clear and professional manner.
The starting pay for this position is $20.90 – $25.55/hour, commensurate with experience.
Example responsibilities:
Custodial Operations:
Work with the Custodial Supervisor to develop the daily work plan and assist in the implementation
Supporting resource for all custodial operation needs both in-house and contracted for all city facilities.
Assist the Custodial Supervisor in providing training for team members.
Work with the city’s Climate Initiatives Department to ensure internal and external custodial operations are following sustainable work practices.
Takes an active role in resolving issues.
Facilitates training on topics related to employee safety, employee development, and custodial operations.
Provides effective coaching. Administrative:
Partners effectively with the facilities leadership team to maintain welcoming facilities within the city.
Completes performance evaluations for in-house custodial operations as well as coaching and career building opportunities.
Conducts Quality Assurance/Quality Control inspections based on the required frequency for each building.
Required candidate skills and competencies:
Exceptional communication skills: Able to convey ideas effectively to the team and supervisor. Actively listening to concerns and open to ideas of customers and colleagues. The ability to notice, interpret, and anticipate others’ concerns and feelings, and to communicate this awareness empathetically to supervisor.
Initiative / Sense of urgency: Identifying what needs to be done and doing it before being asked or before the situation requires it. Completes work in a timely and consistent manner.
The ability to maintain confidential information
Coaching / Instructing: Teaching someone how to do something. Demonstrating patience in answering questions and helping people to increase their skills.
Strong organizational skills: Known for following up and delivering on commitments. The ability to keep clients informed of progress and timelines.
Minimum requirements:
Minimum of 2 years in a leadership role that included significant employee relations.
Minimum of 3 years cleaning experience, which includes a basic knowledge of cleaning chemicals and floorwork techniques.
Must have computer knowledge in Microsoft, office, excel, word etc.
Must have a valid driver’s license.
High degree of initiative and ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Must be willing to work weekends.
High school diploma or GED equivalent
Must be able to pass at least a level one Criminal Justice information System (CJIS) Certification.
Preferred qualifications:
Bi-lingual (English and Spanish)
