Job Description
The National Wind Technology Center operates a unique mix of multi-megawatt scale renewable resources for research purposes including wind turbines, photovoltaic plants, battery energy storage systems, and powertrain dynamometers at our Flatirons Campus located near Boulder, CO (see https://www.nrel.gov/flatirons-campus/ ). Team members work on a wide spectrum of research projects and activities ranging from complex instrumentation and control system design to hands-on system integration.
The Manufacturing and Characterization Group is seeking a senior research technician to join the grid team. The position will involve designing, fabricating, operating, configuring, troubleshooting, and installing electrical and mechanical systems in collaboration with Researchers performing research validation and characterization activities for grid integration and dynamometer projects. Assignments may be broadly or narrowly focused and may require original work contributions. This position will be expected to provide feedback regarding design requirements, experimental plans, standard processes, etc. and propose appropriate alternatives. There must be strong electrical knowledge in industrial environment; ability to become a Qualified Electrical Worker and have a good understanding of Lock Out Tag Out procedures and applications.
Additional job duties of this position include.
Designing instrumentation and data acquisition system based on research objectives.
Performing research and engineering laboratory functions involving the layout, building, testing, troubleshooting, repairing and modification or electronic or electro-mechanical devices, assemblies, subsystems, and systems.
Preparing engineering documentation, reports, and drawings (sketches/flow charts/diagrams/schematics, etc.).
Assisting in coordinating, planning and executing experimental activities in a safe manner
Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Supporting the team in the development of project schedules and maintain schedule accuracy by providing timely status updates.
Meeting the requirements of NREL’s safety program and incorporate safety considerations into projects, research equipment, and facilities.
Complete required training in a timely manner.
Support development of safe operating procedures.
Maintaining excellent housekeeping.
Demonstrate pride, good stewardship, and attention to detail in managing the area(s).
Understanding and identifying the hazards associated with working with electrical systems including battery storage, photovoltaic and other systems.

Basic Qualifications
Research Technician VI:

High School Diploma or equivalent and 14 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Associate’s Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 12 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Research Technician V:

High School Diploma or equivalent and 12 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Associate’s Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 10 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Research Technician IV:

High School Diploma or equivalent and 10 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Associate’s Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 8 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Additional Required Qualifications
Research Technician V & VI:
Frequent use and broad knowledge of related practices, techniques, and standards. Wide-ranging application of theory, concepts, principles and requirements of the discipline or field supported. Advanced skills in research techniques and practices. Excellent communication, interpersonal, project management and customer relations skills.
Research Technician IV:
Extensive knowledge in specialized focused support functions. A comprehensive acquaintance with and understanding of both general and detailed aspects of technical support activities, and their practical application to a wide variety of problems and situations specific to the discipline or field supported. Strong research techniques and practices. Strong communication, interpersonal, project management and customer relations skills.
Preferred Qualifications

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Annual Salary Range: $75,500 – $135,900
Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position’s work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
