JOB LOCATION: Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital – Kapa’a, Kaua’i, HI

FUNCTION: This position is located in the Recreational Therapy department of Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH). Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH), SMMH, and The Kaua’i Region Clinics, which consist of The Clinic at Waimea, The Clinic at Port Allen, The Clinic at Kalaheo, The Specialty Clinic at Kalaheo, The Clinic/Urgent Care at Po’ipu, and the Clinic at Kapa’a are all part of the Kaua’i Region, Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i.

The Recreational Therapy department provides, as part of SMMH’s multi-disciplinary team, an appropriate therapeutic recreation program to maintain the physical and mental health of patients and to assist patients with achieving their physical and mental rehabilitation goals.

The Activities Coordinator is responsible for directing an activity program to meet the patients’/residents’ social, recreational, physical, educational and spiritual needs by using meaningful activity. The Activity Programs are used to enable the patients/residents to function and maintain their dignity and fullest mental and physical capacity for as long as possible. These programs are also used to enhance the patient’s/resident’s feelings of usefulness and encourage self-confidence, self-respect, and empowerment. The Activities Coordinator also is responsible for assessment, program development, performance improvement, budget development/monitoring, and personnel management. This position may be required to work on shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays and may be subject to travel to and from to other facilities within Kaua’i Region. This position reports to the Regional Recreational Therapist V, or its designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience are credited based on a 40-hour workweek.

Licensure: Valid, active State of Hawaii Type 3 Driver’s License.

Certifications: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA).

General Experience:
Three (3) years of work experience in a health facility of which the major duties involved planning and implementing patient/resident activity programs and treatment procedures.

One (1) year of work experience as a Activities Coordinator which involved the planning, assessing, and coordinating a comprehensive Activity Program to enhance the patient’s/resident’s social, recreational, physical, educational and any other needs; human anatomy; administrative practices and procedures in directing patient/resident activity programs and treatment procedures in a hospital or other medically oriented institution or program; budget preparation; and the ability to read, write, speak, and understand and communicate effectively with others in English; supervise and direct the work of subordinates and plan and conduct training programs.

Desirable Qualifications: Team player; patience; neatness; reliability; resourcefulness; and punctuality; Valid State of Hawaii drivers license; successful completion of training curriculum and pass a competency evaluation test approved by the State of Hawaii and in accordance with the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily.

Sensory: Read patient’s/resident’s charts; observe patient/resident; hear the conversational voice.

Coordination and Dexterity: Take the patient’s/resident’s vital signs; manipulative skills.

Strength and Stamina: Push and pull, lift and transfer patients/residents.

Mobility: Transport patients/residents; demonstrate exercises to patients/residents, which include rolling, kneeling, twisting and bending.

Other: Work with cleaning chemicals.

Mental/Emotional Requirements: All applicants must possess emotional and mental stability appropriate to the job duties and responsibilities and working conditions.

COVID-19 vaccination is a condition of employment for Hawaii Health Systems Corporation. After receiving a conditional offer of employment, all prospective new HHSC employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
