Job Description
This position will be filled at the Research Technician Level III or IV, based on the basic and required qualifications of the selected candidate:
NREL has an opening for one full-time Laboratory and Field Demonstration Technician for the technical team (approximately 20 team members and growing) at the Cold Climate Housing Research Center (CCHRC) in Alaska. Members of this group focus on developing energy efficient, resilient building technologies for extreme climates. Through its core programs of building science research, social & economic analysis, and architecture and design, CCHRC develops building and retrofit assemblies and techniques, mechanical systems, and foundations that have improved the performance and affordability of homes across cold climates. CCHRC engages directly with Indigenous communities and cultures in the research and design process to advance energy justice for all.
The Architecture and Design Team (referred to as the Sustainable Northern Communities team) incorporates these technologies into homes and buildings in Alaska and other extreme climate and remote communities. These demonstration and deployment projects also incorporate local and Indigenous knowledge to ensure new technologies are sustainable and equitable. In an extreme changing climate, these demonstration homes require highly innovative technologies such as super-insulated building envelopes, adjustable foundations, and resilient energy systems.
This is an exciting opportunity for the right person to join a mission-focused, interdisciplinary team working at the intersection of science, culture, and community resilience. The successful candidate will collaborate with other designers as well as building scientists, engineers, technicians, construction tradespeople, economists, and outreach staff on a diverse range of projects. The primary responsibility will be supporting building design and demonstration work in extreme, islanded, and remote regions, both in the lab and in the field. The focus of much of this work is to support affordable, innovative, and inclusive housing in underserved, historically-marginalized, and front-line communities in cold climates across the panarctic. Research projects may be funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, other state, local and federal agencies and/or the private sector. Partnering with other national laboratories, academia, industry and other stakeholders is anticipated.
The successful candidate will be working primarily with the Sustainable Northern Communities team supporting research, development, and demonstration projects in both a laboratory and field setting.
The primary responsibilities for this technician include, but are not limited to:
Working with Sustainable Northern Communities and Building Science Research teams to develop effective new building technologies and strategies and develop and construct building prototypes.
Supervise demonstration projects in the field which may include extended travel to remote communities.
For the Research Technician Level III position:
The Research Technician Level III functions independently with minimal supervision and guidance. The Level III has an in-depth understanding and wide application of the technical principles, theories, and concepts.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities of the Research Technician Level III:
Provide technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems.
Impact of work is typically to a well-defined area of a project or specific assignment.
Solid communication, interpersonal, project management, and customer relation skills.
Work is reviewed for soundness of judgement and overall accuracy.
For the Research Technician Level IV position:
The Research Technician Level IV demonstrates a senior level skillset. The Level IV exhibits comprehensive understanding of all parts of the job, along with strong research techniques and practices.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities of the Research Technician Level IV:
Develop technical solutions to complex problems.
Tactical decision-maker
Solid communication, interpersonal, project management, and customer relation skills.
Handles unforeseen issues

Basic Qualifications
Research Technician III:
High School Diploma or equivalent and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Associate’s Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Research Technician IV:
High School Diploma or equivalent and 10 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Associate’s Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 8 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Additional Required Qualifications
Strong, demonstrated knowledge of and experience in the building industry and/or construction field.
Direct, hands-on experience with and knowledge of many aspects of cold climate sustainable building.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to research, compile, and condense information about building construction and methodologies to the general public and other stakeholders.
Experience living in or working with rural Alaska communities;
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint;
Technical writing and editing skills;
Ability to learn laboratory procedures as well as building diagnostic techniques;
Ability to work independently.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in and/or familiarity with a broad range of construction industry fields. Areas of experience may include, but are not limited to: residential, commercial, new construction, retrofits/remodels, whole building construction, Mechanical Electrical Plumbing (MEP) systems, facility maintenance, demolition, abatement/remediation, etc;
Experience or strong familiarity with rural construction logistics;
Experience or basic familiarity with metal fabrication techniques commonly used in structural building systems (ie: foundations, floors, roofs, etc.);
Experience or basic familiarity with renewable electrical systems;
Strong working knowledge of basic building science principles;
Excellent time management skills;
Ability to develop detailed materials list takeoffs for demonstration buildings ;
Ability to conduct remote consultations with on-site carpenters to assist in construction sequencing and building issue diagnoses;
Interest in and ability to consult with homeowners and members of the public regarding cold climate construction techniques, systems, and products.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Annual Salary Range: $46,400 – $76,300
Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position’s work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
