Job Description : Position Summary

The Meter Technician II is responsible for performing daily service work involving connection and disconnection of energized meter services. This position serves as lead worker for Meter Technician I role and backup for Meter Services Supervisor.
The hiring range for this position is $19.80 – $26.24/hour, DOQ

Essential Job Functions

Some of the main duties and responsibilities are listed below: Receives daily service orders regarding connection and disconnection of energized electric and water meters; carries out disconnection of services in the field as well as bulk disconnects in the office utilizing Yukon with the under glass disconnects of electrical services due to non-payment of utility services; and completes service orders in assigned computer system. Installs electric meters for new installation of service; performs voltage tests before energizing service to ensure safety of service and meet all City and State guidelines and requirements; and installs water meters for new services. Identifies and takes appropriate action in emergency situations to protect safety of personnel, property, and general public. Investigates, documents, and reports current diversion and other unsafe meter conditions and abnormal or hazardous system conditions observed in the field to supervisor. Performs electric checks on electric service while energized, using appropriate personal protective equipment provided to determine compliance with electrical standards for voltage and current for size of service provided. Inspects electrical and water services for any irregularities and damaged equipment; repairs and replaces as needed and reports to supervisor. Refers to customer account information, electric voltage, policy and procedure manuals, equipment manuals, safety manuals, maps, technical drawings, codes/ laws/regulations, publications and reference texts, etc. Operates a vehicle and a variety of equipment, machinery, tools, and supplies such as volt meter, field electric tester, battery operated hedge trimmers, electric and water meters, meter seals, wire, wire cutters, wrench, rubber gloves, keys, standard office tools, and others in order to complete work assignments Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data, utilizing MVRS, Daffron, Munis, Yukon, Microsoft Outlook, word processing, spreadsheet, database, Internet, e-mail, or other software, and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions. Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Meter Services Supervisor, Customer Service staff, Billing staff, Electric Department, Water/Sewer Department, coworkers, and the general public as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Receives and/or reviews various records and reports such as electronic requests, voice mail requests, work/service orders, collection service orders, new connects, customer service calls, verbal complaints, inspections, and billing re-reads. Performs lead worker responsibilities including training in job skills, assigning and directing work, making recommendations in performance appraisal, and reporting problems to supervisor; performs field training/testing for Meter Technician I position; assumes duties of Meter Services Supervisor during their absence. Pre-wires current transformer (CT) and potential transformer (PT) meter bases, specific to the City’s wiring diagram, as they come in before they are handed out to contractors. Runs cable in field from the CT’s and PT’s to the meter base and accurately connects each wire to its designated location. Creates meter reading file in Yukon (AMI) and imports file into the Daffron billing system; creates reports to identify and correct variances, missing reads, etc. Updates and corrects any misread or no read accounts. Prints and reviews variance reports from Daffron after completion of routes to ensure accurate reads; checks for any abnormal consumption; and enters and assigns needed re-reads of accounts. Creates and maintains customer meter database in Yukon, initiates the uploading and downloading of meter routes of non-AMI meters into the Itron handheld meter reading equipment, utilizing Daffron CIS and MVRS software. Minimum Required Qualifications

High School diploma or GED

Vocational/Technical certification in related field

Two years’ experience in meter reading/maintenance and/or general electrical service and repair work

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities for this position may be considered.

Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license.
