Job Description : The City of Tacoma is currently accepting applications for the position of legal assistant. Working in a fast paced environment, a person in this position will perform a variety of legal support services including client contact; document preparation, organization, and processing; research; and related clerical activities. As part of the City Attorney’s Office, assignments may include litigation, labor and employment law, civil, criminal and municipal law. QUALIFICATIONS:
An equivalent combination to: graduation from high school supplemented by one year of legal assistant coursework including word processing, legal office procedures and legal terminology, plus a minimum of two years of recent and relevant legal assistant experience involving preparing and processing legal forms and documents. NOTE: Experience can substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.

Legal terminology, forms and procedures
Legal research methods
Procedures for filing and serving legal documents
Forms and formats for documents used in litigation
Record-keeping techniques
Oral and written communications skills.
Telephone techniques and etiquette
Standardized rules of language regarding grammar, spelling, punctuation, word usage, sentence structure, and composition
Word, Excel, and Access programs
SKILLS:
Work planning/prioritization/time management
Organizational awareness, including City structure, roles, and responsibilities of work unit
Accurate and timely processing and preparation of a wide variety of legal forms, documents and instruments
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
Read, interpret, apply and explain codes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures
Perform clerical duties such as filing, copying, phone answering, and typing
Maintain records and prepare reports
Work independently with little direction
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
