Position Description and Board Expectations:
The Board of Directors of the Springfield Family YMCA is pursuing a visionary leader with a passion for the YMCA mission and cause and whose everyday priorities reflect the core YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. This is an outstanding opportunity to lead a YMCA who is viewed as a strong and vital nonprofit to the community and build upon the recovery efforts led by our previous CEO. Our YMCA is well positioned for growth and expansion through strategic partnerships, and we are financially stable. Springfield is thriving community, close to Dayton and Columbus, with a reasonable cost of living and an abundance of recreational and cultural opportunities.
Springfield Family YMCA Association Facts:
History: The YMCA has been in the community since 1854. The YMCA is in downtown Springfield and services all of Clark County Ohio. The population is 60K in city of Springfield, 134K in Clark County. Demographics include: 20% seniors, 22% under 18 yrs. of age, of which 6% under age 5. 86% white, 10 % African American, 4% other or combination.
YMCA Membership and Facility Features Include: The YMCA has 5077 members (2710 units) and the composition is: 50% seniors, 25% families, 16% adult, and 9% Youth and young adult. Besides the membership facility, the Y also operates an offsite licensed preschool licensed for 64 children. The facility is 48,000 square feet and includes 2 gymnasiums, free weight room, indoor track, wellness center, indoor 6-lane pool, 2 racquetball courts, personal training studio, aerobics room, 4 locker rooms, board room and child watch area. The facility is 33 years old. A new roof was installed in 2017 and we are currently investing approx. $100K per year on deferred maintenance that has accumulated over the last 20 years.
Programs: The YMCA is committed to child abuse prevention and aquatics safety. The Y does online trainings thru Praesidium and conducts background checks. The Y has been thru the Praesidium Guardian training. The current Aquatic Safety plan is reviewed annually. Signature areas include a strong senior membership, swim team, group exercise and youth aquatics, youth sports and camp. YMCA program enrollment is still recovering.
Staff: Current staff structure includes about 140 total staff – 10 are FT, 100-120 PT and 10 seasonal. The CEO has 8 direct reports – 6 Directors and 2 Coordinators and includes: Business/HR Manager, Senior Program Dir (Membership & Aquatics), Program Director (Youth, Family & Teens), Facility Director, Childcare Director, Head Swim Team Coach, Fitness Coordinator, The Y is currently filling the Group Exercise Coordinator and Facility Director positions.
Volunteerism: The Y currently has 19 board members representing a diverse spectrum across age, vocation, and race. The bylaws were revised in 2021. The Y has approximately 200 program volunteers annually who serve as interns, coaches, officials, and program aides.
Finances: The Y is on a calendar year, fiscal year. The 2022 budget is approved for $1.3 million. The YMCA $216K in debt, cash on hand is equivalent to two months of operations and $500K in endowment and investments.
Philanthropy: The YMCA raised $124K on a goal of $100K in 2022. The Y awards $189K in financial assistance annually and has calculated its community benefit as $292K annually. The YMCA has not had a recent capital campaign but is considering several projects for the future.
Advantages to Area: Springfield is home to great parks, a trail system and ample infrastructure for small and intimate metropolitan area. The town has deep roots and expansive infrastructure thanks to Wittenberg University and past industrial history. Springfield has an active arts scene, a downtown redevelopment project, old historic homes and is home to unique attractions such as Frank Lloyd Wright Westcott House and Hartman Rock Garden.

Qualifications

Minimum Criteria for Candidates:

Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.

Minimum three years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff. Proven ability to attract and retain staff and volunteer leadership.

Experience developing new programs and reviewing and enhancing current programs offered or considered for both fiscal viability and the effectiveness in broadening our engagement in the communities in which we serve.

Fiscally sound business management approach and a proven track record of budgetary and fiscal management.

A successful track record in developing, fostering, and strengthening community relationships by leading efforts to create new alliances, partnerships, and collaboration with other organizations to help the Y achieve its mission.

Preferred Criteria for Candidates:

Possession of a degree from an accredited 4-year college or university.

Current YMCA Organizational Leader certification. Candidates without the certification will have three (3) years to complete certification requirements after hire.

Fundraising experience including leadership of annual campaign.

Experience with master facility planning and capital replacement planning.

Essential Functions

Key Priority Areas:
Improve Operating Performance and Ensure Recovery Through Strong Fiscal Management: Use high-level financial analysis to forecast financial trends, growth, and stability, while consistently leading organization to balance or surplus operations by growing earned revenue and contributions and controlling costs. Empower and guide staff leaders to lead their departments to successful financial operation. Quickly address financial issues that may arise, forecast future needs, and manage and direct the Y’s operations to ensure recovery and revitalization post-pandemic.
Develop and Implement a Strategic Plan: Provide the visionary leadership and work effectively with volunteers, community leaders, and key staff, to create and develop a strategic plan that addresses the needs of the communities served by the Y and includes defined organizational strategies, a clear implementation plan with deliverables, and measurable goals. Lead and engage the staff and volunteers as the Y delivers on the promise of the plan, most recently completed in January, 2021.
Build and Lead Staff: Hire, motivate, nurture, retain, and hold staff accountable for key objectives as you develop a high performing team. Work towards recruiting, retaining, developing, and promoting staff that represent the diversity of the community we serve. Encourage the team by creating a spirit of camaraderie, inclusion, and sense of mission and purpose. Create a learning organization to help staff achieve their highest potential.
Position the Y as a Vital Partner to Strengthen Community: Serve as an ambassador for the mission, purpose, and vision for the YMCA within the community. Identify, develop and cultivate strategic relationships with key stakeholders from diverse backgrounds, while always upholding the highest standards and values of the Y. Ensure our Y continues to be seen as a vibrant nonprofit committed to strengthening community, serving as a convener to ensure our community thrives as it recovers from the pandemic.
Steward Fundraising Efforts: Develop and implement an annual fundraising plan that will establish the YMCA as a leading nonprofit organization within the community through the engagement of members, volunteers, staff, and donors. Identify the need for successful capital fundraising, while taking the organization to a new level of effectiveness and impact in annual giving and endowment. Lead a robust process to assess facility needs and develop a plan with the board to fund replacement efforts to ensure the facility is relevant into the future.
Salary Range: $85,000 – $100,000
Benefits: Total compensation package includes health insurance (70% of premium paid by YMCA and 30% paid by employee) and life insurance. The Y is on the YMCA Retirement Fund with 5% paid by the YMCA and 3% paid by employee. Other benefits as outlined in the employee manual. Vacation is based on years of service.
Residency: The preferred residency is in Clark County.
