Job Summary
The University of Utah seeks an innovative, creative thinker with expertise in writing and editing to be an associate editor for the University of Utah Magazine and the University of Utah Marketing & Communications office. We’re looking for an experienced writer with strong editing skills who can shape and balance content, and write substantive, in-depth, and institutionally important feature stories about the University of Utah, its programs, faculty, students, and alumni. The associate editor reports directly to the editor-in-chief and assists with the production process from beginning to end of each issue of the magazine.

Housed in the university’s central communications office, the associate editor will be an integral part of a creative team and will also support the university’s communications initiatives by developing relevant and engaging content under the direction of the director for content and editorial strategy for other university communications channels.

In addition to excellent editing and writing skills, this position requires familiarity with principles of magazine journalism; interest in higher-education issues; ability to communicate and interact well with highly educated constituencies; fastidious attention to detail; and diplomacy in dealing with a wide variety of people on- and off-campus.

Responsibilities
Generate, write, and edit stories related to the university, including the people, programs, and issues at the heart of the U’s mission. The stories will range in length from photo captions to full-length magazine features.Work closely with designers on visual concepts, photography, graphics, and layout of both print and web editions.Review and edit content through every stage of production from draft to layout to web.Work with in-house and contract/freelance writers, editors, designers, podcasters, photographers, etc.Arrange and attend photo shoots, and be willing to attend events around campus to stay abreast of campus activities, news, and potential stories.Work with web team to get site ready to go live each issue: edit web site, prepare photo galleries, add links, upload videos, and help conceive, create, or find additional multimedia elements such as videos, interactive graphics, and podcasts. Also compile and edit mass email notifications for each issue.Track website and email analytics, along with other key performance indicators and help develop and present reports on performance of publication toward goals.Assist with other aspects of the magazine, including budget, circulation, name mail and other duties.Provide support for additional editorial needs of the U’s Marketing & Communications team, including general media relations, executive communications, and other efforts.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in area of specialty and 4-6 years of experience in the field or in a related area, or equivalency is required.

Preferences
Previous experience in publications, writing and editing. Also experience with public relations, alumni relations, advertising and working in higher education preferred. Master’s degree is a plus.
