YOUR POSITION WITH TNC
The Utah Dugout Ranch Cowhand performs and participates in the Dugout Ranch cattle operations, including the maintenance, management, development and coordination of the cattle herd, equipment, fencing and corrals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Utah Dugout Ranch Cowhand (DRC) herds cattle on winter and summer ranges at the Dugout Ranch in order to maintain the health of both the cattle and the rangelands. The DRC also works to maintain the health of the Ranch’s livestock (cattle and horses), including feeding, watering, packing out salt and protein block, branding, calving, loading for transport, inoculating, etc. The DRC also assists with maintaining fences and corrals, provides basic Ranch vehicle and horse trailer maintenance and repair, and performs other Ranch operations tasks, as assigned. It is a requirement of this position that the employee live on site at the Dugout Ranch in the housing provided, and a housing agreement must be signed. This position also requires proof of a COVID-19 vaccination.
RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
Demonstrates knowledge of animal husbandry and cattle ranching operations, including horse wrangling, livestock health maintenance, maintenance of springs/troughs/water sources and maintenance/operation of heavy ranch equipment. Also demonstrates basic knowledge of cartography and irrigation systems.
Performs tasks with minimal supervision and makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context.
May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree and 3 years’ experience in natural resource management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience with cattle ranch management.
Experience completing tasks independently with respect to timelines.
Experience operating and/or repairing various types of equipment and machinery.
Must have a valid driver’s license.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
3 – 5 years’ related experience in natural resource management, similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of ecological land and ranch management principles.
Experience managing other staff or volunteers.
Working knowledge of common software applications.
Communicating clearly via written and spoken means.
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
It is a requirement of this position that the employee live on site at the Dugout Ranch in the housing provided, and a housing agreement must be signed. This position also requires proof of a COVID-19 vaccination.
