Position : Director of Mountain School

Job Description : Under the direction of the Sr Director of Resort Guest Services, you will lead a team of ski and snowboard instructors, management and support staff. You’ll provide instruction, guiding, hospitality and fun to local and out-of-state clients by offering a dynamic selection of instructional and clinic/camp products.What You’ll Be DoingStaff Training:Plan and oversee the training of new instructors each year. Ensure smooth assimilation into the schoolPlan and provide returning staff training and updates each season.Plan and implement ongoing technical, service, and risk management training for staff.Innovate with external resources and timing to motivate staff participation and ongoing improvement.Work closely with other resort departments to provide the following:Human Resources:Follow company practices for hiring, training, development, and disciplinary actions.Ensure management team is trained in protocols and practices.Monitor and evaluate employee performance, (together with management team) provide ongoing coaching to enhance individual employee development and guest satisfaction.Consistently enforce all Snowbird policy and procedures, ensuring efficiency and fair operation.Develop and maintain policies and procedures specific to the Mountain School department. Ensure alignment with the company policies.Ensure systems of staff recognition are developed and utilized. These include individual staff recognition and team recognition.Marketing and Group SalesWork with marketing department to develop and implement marketing tools such as web site, brochures, sales boards, progress cardsDevelop and create guest gifts for special programsHelp provide products for groups on property as neededFood & BeverageDetermine cost and menu for children’s program lunchesDetermine camp food and special eventsFinance:Develop and maintain budget that aligns with resort overall financial goals.Develop pay structure that supports overall budgetary frameworks while incentivizing staff appropriately.Maintain accountability for efficiency through revenue/labor reporting and monthly P and L.Document expenditures as per company protocols.Risk ManagementMaintain a safe work environment: locker rooms, offices and learning terrainEnsure proper use and maintenance of all Mountain School office space, locker room and all Snowbird assets (including uniforms and radios).Focus on accident prevention and train employees in proper safety procedures.Take immediate and appropriate action to correct unsafe work practices or facilities.Provide proper training for child safety including policies and procedures for protection from child predators.Provide policy and training for proper interactions with guests via phones and social media.Administration:Build and refine programs that provide for the efficient purchase and registration experience for Snowbird guests.Implement and ensure efficient and effective use of systems to aid with online sales, on site sales, staff scheduling and other staff administration.Direct, monitor and support staff scheduling, instructional assignments and pay administration for Mountain School employees.Ensure efficient and effective payroll management to ensure staff are paid correctly.Guest ServiceProvide the highest levels of service to guests and staff of all backgrounds and experience.Utilize and mine guest service survey data for feedback and continual improvement in staff training and program enhancementsUtilize survey data to coach, correct, and recognize staffPlanning and VisionEvaluate existing and create potential new Mountain School programs and lesson offerings.Evaluate lesson prices/packages to more accurately reflect competitive ski resorts in order to attract and retain business and grow revenue.Work closely with other Snowbird departments to plan future facilities, terrain modifications, marketing programs and technological improvements to enhance the guest and staff experience.InteractionsDirect and continuous contact with guests.Direct and continuous contact with co-workers, management, and other departments.Must have the ability to interact at any time with guests and other employees in a pleasant manner and maintain good working relationship s with others and all departments at Snowbird.Education & Experience RequirementsHigh School Diploma or equivalent required.College degree in related field preferred. Additional related work experience may be substituted for education.5-10 years of job-specific work experience with demonstrated competence.Specific RequirementsMust be at least 21 years of age.Must be able to ski or snowboard.Valid Driver License w/ clean MVR (driving record)PSIA Certification Minimum Level 2 (Alpine or Snowboard)Skills & KnowledgeTechnical: Must have strong and proven understanding of policies and regulations regarding working with children.Must be competent skier/rider, with knowledge of Snowbird terrain.Must be familiar with computer operating software and systems used in ski school operations.Requires the ability to communicate clearly and precisely in a variety of situations such as training staff and teaching guests.Requires the ability to discern between simple and complex situations and apply creative alternatives.Requires the ability to effectively pass information through the Mountain School structure.Candidate should be energetic, confident and highly motivated when working with staff and others.Accepts and encourages input from Mountain School staff and others.Administrative: Knowledge and understanding of guest information privacy and confidentiality, reporting, storage and disposal of sensitive information including PCI DSS.Will not share or disclose any guest personal or financial information to anyone unless authorized by the guest, manager or company or unless disclosure is permitted within departmental policies and procedures.Requires various managerial skills including problem solving, anger-management, and ability to instill values in staff.Lead by example, with commitment to timeliness and putting in a full day’s work, as well as efforts to attract business to Mountain School organization.Ability to handle discipline issues fairly, foster accountability within Mountain School organization, and restructure organization to increase effectiveness.Strong financial background and meticulous attention to budgeting process required.Result-driven with understanding of business impacts, and ability to address pay plan issues.Working ConditionsWork Schedule: Shifts vary, may be early morning or late evening, weekends, holidays, depending on business levels.Mental: Must be prepared to stay overnight, if necessary, on occasional times of road closures.May experience unusual stress from high business volumes, deadlines, continual work with public, winter conditions, snow night requirements and commuting to/from Snowbird.Physical: Must be able to lift 50+ lbs.Must be able to stand for long periods of time.Must demonstrate ability to bend, kneel, handle, reach, grasp and perform repetitive motions.Work is outdoors and requires constant exposure to cold and other extreme weather conditions.Work is subject to frequent interruptions making continuity and accuracy difficult, frequent exposure to noise.Snowbird is an affirmative action employer, Age 40 and over, color, disability, gender identity, genetic information, military or veteran status, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation or any other applicable status protected by state or local law, are not taken into account in any employment decision.
