DonorConnect seeks a full-time Family Support Coordinator with an advanced level of sensitivity to provide emotional support to grieving families in the hospital setting. This position is responsible for call functions, creating a positive environment for the donation process within the hospital, collaborating with the Organ Donation Coordinator (ODC) in coordinating the authorization conversation with potential donor families, and maintaining a supportive relationship with families throughout the donation process. The position requires attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work closely with various medical professionals in a professional and competent manner.
Under the supervision of the Manager, Donor Family Services:
Must be able to work flexible and long hours (nights, weekends, and holidays)
Provides emotional support to grieving families in the hospital intensive care unit setting
Assesses family dynamics and develops a plan for the approach and donation discussion
Collaborates with ODC, physician, and hospital staff to determine the appropriate time for donation conversation
Leads discussion with family and accurately obtains legal authorization
Has basic knowledge of ethical and legal requirements and standards related to the privacy of protected health information.
Training/Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Science or Social Science preferred, and/or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience
Medical Terminology or equivalent experience in a medical environment
Required Knowledge:
Strong behavioral assessment and crisis intervention skills, including experience with de-escalation techniques preferred
Knowledge of computer hardware and software
Knowledge of organ and tissue donation preferred
Experience Required:
Minimum three years of counseling, social work, or bereavement support preferred
Minimum three years of working with families in crisis situations in a hospital setting preferred, especially critical care units
Skills/Abilities:
Advanced level of sensitivity in providing emotional support to grieving families in the hospital setting
Ability to assess family dynamics as the basis for a plan for support
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Attentive to detail and ability to maintain accurate records
Able to work well with all levels of personnel in hospital settings, and within guidelines of each institution
Willingness to train and assist others
Must be able to work flexible and long hours and provide call coverage on nights, weekends, and holidays
