Job Summary
Located in Salt Lake City, the University of Utah is a public, 4-year institution committed to providing an exceptional academic and co-curricular experience for students and the University community. The “U” is a PAC-12 institution with over 33,000 students. Housing & Residential Education is home to 4,300 students. The University Housing Campus Master plan calls for continued growth and construction to meet the housing demand.

As the Assistant Director you will provide expertise for the growth, implementation and assessment of the Residential Learning Model (a curricular approach to residential learning/education). You will work directly with the various logistical aspects of the residential learning model (RLM). In conjunction with the Associate Director of Residential Education, as the Assistant Director you will provide strategic management and vision for developing and implementing the Residential Learning Model.

In this role you support the residential campus population by serving as part of the on-call coverage team. This is a twelve-month appointed staff position. The Assistant Director reports to the Associate Director of Residential Education.

Responsibilities
1. Supervision
Directly supervise three-five Resident Directors and Indirectly supervise Graduate Assistants and 45 – 55 undergraduate Student Leaders.
Provide oversight of the Residential Learning Model (a curricular approach to Residential Learning) congruent with the mission and vision of the University and the values and mission of the department. Enrich professional competencies of staff as educators in the residential community.
Provide recruitment, selection, orientation, training, supervision, direction and evaluation as appropriate.
Serves as a member of the management team for Housing & Residential Education. Assists with the development and implementation of department goals and objectives. Assists in department planning and decision making.
Provide intentional leadership for the Residential Education team based on the HRE values of Staff Excellence/Professional Growth, Integrity, Team, Service, Social Justice/Inclusion, and Positive Attitude. Build authentic relationships with team members to support team morale and progress.
Support the diversity of Housing & Residential Education staff and residents.
Oversee budget activities associated budgets.
Assist with departmental training of staff (full-time, graduate assistant, and student leaders).
Complete the HR Management Essentials training, department retreats and training initiatives and department and university professional development opportunities.

2. Student Learning – Residential Learning Model Management (RLM)
Understand and implement the 10 tenets of a curricular approach within the RLM.
Collaborate with Assistant Directors and Residential Education team members to implement and refine the RLM. Provide orientation and training opportunities for the Resident Directors, RAs, and LLC/TC Partners as they interact with and implement the RLM.
Oversee Committee/Task Forces charged to review, edit, and refine the RLM. Share long-term vision for RLM growth, set charges for each Task Force, support committee members, review project completion.
Provide ongoing support for all staff members to ensure that the curricular approach is infuse in all aspects and functional areas of Housing and Residential Education.
Support learning for residents from historically marginalized and underrepresented communities through the individualization and refinement of the RLM.

3. Assessment
Coordinate assessment for the RLM. Share data with stakeholders including the Residential Education team, departmental leadership, and key campus partners.
Annually review all Residential Education initiatives and development of an assessment plan for Residential Education. Integrate assessment techniques and processes by directly working with Residential Education team members.
Collect, manage, and analyze data from multiple sources.
Create and manage intentional sharing of data and information collected.
Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Communication and Assessment, overseeing the data management of the Residential Learning Model and ensure that the department remains student learning centered.
Collaborate with Assistant Directors to ensure assessment processes are implemented in Residential Education programs, initiatives, and projects.
4. Committees, Relationships, & Involvement
Serve as a member of selected department and divisional committees.
Serve as the guide and mentor to a Residential Education committee.
Participate in regional, national, and international student affairs professional organizations to develop new skills and experience and keep abreast of current research in college student personnel administration.
Complete additional responsibilities as assigned to meet department and university needs.
5. Conduct & Crisis Response
Serve in the on-call duty rotation with other members of the Residential Education management team to support Resident Director staff to manage crisis/urgent situations and relay information to appropriate personnel.
Respond to critical inquiries from families, students, staff, faculty, alumni, and other campus constituencies. Utilize knowledge of legal issues pertinent to housing.
In collaboration with the Assistant Director for Conduct, ensure the educational value of residential conduct systems and proper implementation of Emergency Procedures.
Adjudicate conduct cases and conduct appeal cases.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education).
Four to six years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of hiring department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred.

1. Master’s degree in higher education administration or a related field.
2. A minimum of three – five years of post-master’s professional experience in housing with increasing responsibility.

5. Ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative supervisory and colleague working relationships.
6. Dedication to the professional development of staff.
7. Knowledge of current and emerging principles of good practices for Student Affairs and Housing & Residential Education.
8. Demonstrated commitment to foster student learning in the residence halls and experience working with educational outcomes and student learning evaluation.
9. Demonstrated experience with student conduct, crisis intervention and emergency response. Experience with analyzing and resolving conflict, team building, group dynamics, and problem-solving skills.
10. Ability to multi-task and remain organized in a high energy, fast paced department.
11. Demonstrated skill in program implementation and assessment, including skill with Microsoft excel.
12. Knowledge of sound fiscal and budgetary practices.
13. Direct experience with recruitment, selection, and training within the area of Housing.
14. Experience working with residentially based curriculums/curricular approach.
15. Experience implementing assessment plans and techniques.
