PUBLIC RELATIONS SPECIALIST
OPENING DATE: 03/01/2022

SALARY: GRADE 11 $46,494.00 – $68,306.00 annually ($22.35 – $32.84 hourly; wage will be dependent upon education and experience)
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under the supervision of the Communications Director, the Public Relations Specialist produces articles, written content, social media posts, website content, and more with the goal of proactively educating the public, disseminating timely information, and bringing awareness to important city issues. The position is tasked with supporting the messaging priorities of the city’s elected officials and administration and in assisting to implement strategic communications campaigns and initiatives.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: (These examples are not all-inclusive)
Write and develop content for newsletters, website pages, social media posts, and other communications outputs.
Produce public education messaging and content for a variety of topics, which may include emergency preparedness, water conservation, stormwater, city ordinances, etc.
Draft talking points, write speeches, compile research, and prepare presentations as assigned.
Disseminate timely information related to city issues, projects, events, and initiatives as assigned.
Edit and proofread content and communication items.
Frequently update the city website (no coding experience required) to ensure content is accurate, timely, and fresh.
Create a social media content calendar and write and schedule approved social media posts.
Respond in a timely manner to social media messages and questions.
Attend community events and city functions, as assigned, to take photos or video, produce timely social media posts and stories, or fulfill other roles in staffing events.
Plan, coordinate, set up, and staff public outreach events as assigned (i.e., booths at events, visits to schools, town hall meetings, roundtable discussions, workshops, training).
Coordinate select public award and recognition programs, including nomination, selection, and presentation details, and write corresponding spotlights for publication.
Find, apply for, and coordinate award and recognition opportunities for the city, city departments, and elected officials, working in close coordination with the Communications Director.
Assist with compiling media mentions and with compiling regular reports.
Assist the Communications Director with media relations, press releases, media advisories, public statements, and press/media events as assigned.
Serve as backup public information officer (PIO) for the city and conduct media relations activities in the absence of the Communications Director.
Assume other responsibilities and complete other tasks as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience, in public relations, communications, marketing or related field required
2+ years’ experience required in writing (news writing, copywriting, content writing, or similar)
2+ years’ experience managing social media platforms on behalf of an organization required
1+ years’ experience updating websites preferred (no coding experience required)
1+ years’ experience using basic functions of Adobe Photoshop
1+ years’ experience with email marketing preferred

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Successful candidates must pass a pre-employment drug test, a background screen, provide a copy of their current driving record, and provide employment verification with form I-9. This position has a six-month probation period.
