Job Description : The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fish and Game Coordinator located in either Juneau/Douglas, Sitka, or Ketchikan! Pay is based on the location of the selected applicant.
What you will be doing:
Under the general direction of the Regional Supervisor, this position is responsible for the management of the sport fisheries in Southeast Alaska. The individual in this position must understand and apply principles of fisheries management commonly used in the State of Alaska, be familiar with Alaska Fish and Game Laws and Regulations associated with the management of Alaskan fisheries, understand Alaska Board of Fisheries (BOF) protocols and procedures, be able to lead and supervise a large group of highly motivated Area Management Biologists located remotely, and be able to effectively articulate complex and controversial positions and ideas to groups that may be in opposition. This individual will oversee management activities and projects associated with the management of salmon, resident species, groundfish, and shellfish in Southeast Alaska. In addition, this position participates in the Pacific Salmon Treaty process holding a seat on the Northern Boundary Technical Committee advising Alaska’s Pacific Salmon Commissioner and Alternate Commissioner on sport fishery management and research programs in Southeast Alaska, along with performing outreach to other state and federal agencies.

Provide guidance, direction, and support in the management of recreational finfish and shellfish fisheries to ensure they are managed for sustainable use of wild stocks, to provide for a diversity of fishing experience, and to optimize social and economic benefits to the state.
Coordinate all fishery management activities within Region I, coordinate the activities of seven area management biologists, and take the lead in all regional interactions with the Alaska Board of Fisheries (BOF). This individual will work closely with the access and enhancement coordinator to review access locations, manage enhanced stocks, identify potential new enhancement opportunities, and provide necessary feedback for the Regional Planning Team process.
Oversees management of fisheries that are fully allocated and highly contentious among the user groups. Management actions are highly complex due to involvement with international Treaty obligations and federal fishery management plans thus necessitating coordination and collaboration with numerous federal entities (e.g. US/Canada Pacific Salmon Treaty; Pacific Halibut Treaty; Magnuson-Stevens Fisheries Conservation Act).

The person in this position will lead the regional management team consisting of seven area managers to effectively oversee management of fully allocated and highly contentious fisheries made complicated because of a international treaty and federal fishery management plans.
Working conditions you can expect:
The position is located at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Regional Office in Douglas, Alaska. The office is within walking distance of the Treadwell Ditch and Mount Jumbo (Bradley) trails both offering a moderate chance to view wildlife and in some locations beautiful panoramic views of downtown Juneau. In addition, the office is in walking distance of the Savviko Park, Sandy Beach and Mike Pusich Douglas Harbor Boat Launch Ramp offering boat access to Gastineau Channel and the local marine fishery. A person in this position would have immediate access to the regional research coordinator and the regional supervisor also located in the same office, as well as HQ divisional staff located across the channel in Juneau. We are looking for a candidate that possesses some or all of the following position-specific competencies (If you have any experience with the following, please document these in your application and supplemental questions):
Ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise fisheries management activities for multiple fisheries.
Strong writing, public speaking, and interpersonal skills are essential since the incumbent often serves as the spokesperson for the department when dealing with other government agencies, the fishing industry, the general public, reporters, legislators, and outside contractors.
Experience with understanding and synthesizing biological, statistical, and socioeconomic issues involved in natural resource management.
Experience in supervising fisheries biologists and evaluating performance.
Special Notice:
This position will require occasional travel to meetings, training, remote field projects, and area offices for up to two weeks at a time.
Access to firearms and ammunition may be required while working in the field for protection of life and property from wildlife.
Must have a valid Alaska Driver’s License.
Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management;
AND
Seven years of professional experience as a fisheries, wildlife, or habitat biologist that includes at least one year as a program manager or technical expert or two years at an advanced professional level. The program manager or technical expert experience is met by service as a Fisheries Biologist 4, Wildlife Biologist 4, or Habitat Biologist 4 and the advanced professional biologist experience is met by service as a Fisheries Biologist 3, Wildlife Biologist 3, or Habitat Biologist 3 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Substitutions:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; andat least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
A master’s degree in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management will substitute for one year of the required professional experience. There is no substitute for the requirement for specific experience as a program manager or technical expert or at an advanced professional level.
A doctorate in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management will substitute for three years of the required professional experience. There is no substitute for the requirement for specific experience as a program manager or technical expert or at an advanced professional level.

“Upper division courses” means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline’s theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.
