Job Description:
Take advantage of this unique opportunity to work in a remote part of Utah with abundant fish and wildlife opportunities. We’re looking for an aquatic biologist that will do a variety of work, including assisting with the monitoring and management of Flaming Gorge Reservoir, the Green River, and several other highly used fisheries in Northeastern Utah.

Preference may be given to applicants with a Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in fisheries, aquatic biology, fisheries and wildlife management, or directly related field and/or to those with full-time related experience.

Principal Duties:
As a Sportfish Biologist, you will:
Monitor fish populations to develop management recommendations and outreach for the angling public
Analyze biological data, interpret results, and write reports summarizing findings and management recommendations
Interact regularly with federal and state agencies, NGOs, anglers, local businesses and Chambers of Commerce
Train and supervise technicians and volunteers
Maintain equipment including facilities, boats, trailers, and small engines
Operate a fish trap in the fall which aids in the annual propagation of Kokanee Salmon stocked statewide

The Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will have:
A Bachelor degree or higher in fisheries management or related field of study.
An understanding of basic fisheries management concepts and the ability to communicate them effectively
Good interpersonal skills for working with others, including the public
Experience with boats and sampling gear and their application on large bodies of water sometimes at night and during inclement weather conditions
Experience using and maintaining equipment like small engines and outboard motors
Additional preference will be given to candidates with a Master’s Degree or higher in fisheries management or related fields

Duties are highly variable, ranging from sampling small streams or reservoirs, boat electrofishing trout on the clear waters of the Green River, handling large lake trout in excess of 30lbs on Flaming Gorge, and collecting and spawning stream run Kokanee Salmon during the cool, comfortable days of autumn. Typical Qualifications
Knowledges, skills, abilities, other characteristics (KSAOs) or education:
Bachelor’s of Science in aquatic/wildlife related sciences is preferred with background in the following areas
Biological monitoring and sampling, including- conduct sampling of reservoir, river, and stream environments using gillnets, hydroacoustics, trawls, electrofishing, creel surveys, water quality sampling, etc.
Conduct data analysis, summarization and technical reporting
Conduct literature reviews, and attend professional meetings for a more complete knowledge of management issues
Administrative duties including accounting, vehicle reports, etc.
Development of management and work plans, regulation and project proposals
Supervision of seasonal technicians, and coordination with state and federal agencies
Experience in facilities repair and maintenance including welding, plumbing, construction, electrical, etc. Experience in the operation, repair and maintenance of equipment including small engines, boats, trailers, etc.
Ability to interact with the public and special interest groups, disseminate information through media outlets, and appropriately respond to questions and concerns.
Work well with regional staff to complete a variety of regional aquatic, wildlife, and habitat projects.

Supplemental Information
Working Conditions:
Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around machines, boats, electricity, hazardous chemicals, ATV’s etc.
Work requires physical exertion. Work is perform in and around water. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 80 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time, hike rough terrain, and safely operate large boats at nighttime and in inclement weather.
Ability to work in a variety of conditions from snow and sub-freezing in winter to temperatures in excess of 100 degrees in the summer.
80 hours a pay period, Mon-Thurs, but some nighttime and weekend work required
DWR housing is available in Dutch John, UT within walking distance of the work station.
Requirements:
Valid Drivers License
Non-commercial pesticide applicators certificate at time of hire or within probationary period.
Willing to work/camp away from home on occasion to conduct sampling in remote areas.
Must be able to travel throughout the state on occasion to assist with other statewide projects.
Occasionally working long hours, typical during field season.
Must be able to pass a background and drug test.
Preference may be given to applicants with:
Background in wild fish traps and egg collections
Safe boat operation, especially on large water bodies
Experience with aging fish and assessing growth
Lab experience, including enumeration of zooplankton
Good verbal and written communication skills
