The Law Enforcement Bureau at the Utah Department of Corrections is looking for a qualified and driven individual to fill the exciting role of Correctional Chief of Investigations. We are seeking an exceptional leader with extensive law enforcement experience and a background in investigation.
Incumbents in this role are responsible for the day to day operations of
the Corrections investigation office and report directly to the Executive
Director of the Utah Department of Corrections.
It is anticipated that interviews for this position will be held on Tuesday, March 29, 2022. Applicants selected for interview will be contacted after this recruitment closes on Tuesday, March, 22 2022.
**This is a Schedule AD, at will, Career Service Exempt position.**
Principal DutiesDevelops investigation policies and procedures.Responsible for a variety of internal and external investigations and coordinating unit work efforts with other law enforcement agencies.Responsible for and conducts both custodial and non-custodial investigations.Oversees, reviews and monitors cases, reports and case screenings with District, County, and United States Attorneys.Conducts investigations into allegations of individuals involved in a variety of crimes, inappropriate activities, rules infractions, and illegal actions.Develops and coordinates plans and policies, resources, and mission as well as goals, vision, and expectations of agency or program; prepares and updates plans and priorities.Supervises subordinate personnel including: hiring, determining workload and delegating assignments, training, monitoring and evaluating performance, and initiating corrective or disciplinary actions.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for this position is someone who has the following:
Written and spoken knowledge of the English language.Knowledge of theories of personality and deviant behavior, delinquency, criminology and corrections.Ability to administer assessments, create case action plans and draft reports.Knowledge of research techniques and the writing of professional reports.Present effective interpretations of programming and operational policies and procedures, verbally and/or in writing.Exercises good judgment on the basis of previous training and experience.Excellent communication skills, both verbal and in writing.Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with institutional staff, administrative personnel and with the personnel of other agencies.Has high standards and a good work ethic.
Preferences
Prior law enforcement experience Extensive supervisory experience Experience in complex investigations Adept at investigations utilizing technology and other tools Experience in both personnel and criminal investigations

Job requires POST certification; Peace Officer Standards Training in Utah.
Risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g. working at great heights, working in extreme outdoor weather conditions, being subject to possible physical attack, as well as physical and/or verbal abuse and/or exposure to ill offenders, cleaning compounds and supplies etc.
The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas, defending oneself and/or others against physical attack.
Valid driver license required to drive a motor vehicle on a highway in this state per UCA 53-3-202(1)(a).
